Navigating Last-Minute Cancellations: Seeking Advice on Hotel Date Rescheduling

I have a client that bought tickets for a family of 4 to all inclusive trip to Puerto Vallarta last December. We found out that the daughter had an expired passport also, she was not feeling well. She ended up in the ER for abdominal issues that night before the flight took off. Therefore, did was not able to get on the plane. Client was able get the airfare to use for later time, but there was an issue with the hotel side of it. Have reached out to the hotel and they will not give a refund but I suggested to move the dates for another time. What can I do as a travel agent to get the hotel to vouch for future dates along with the airfare time frame so my clients wont lose so much money and hotel stay.
